Getting Started with Yoga: A Beginner’s Guide

The Well Yoga DBQ | NOV 3, 2024

Has someone recommended that you try yoga, but you don’t know where to start? The word "yoga" itself can feel intimidating, as it’s linked to so many different physical and spiritual practices. If you’re feeling confused or unsure whether yoga is right for you, you’re not alone.

First, it’s helpful to know that there are many types of yoga. Some styles are more physical, while others focus on spiritual practice. To get a better understanding of the different styles, check out our blog on types of yoga.

Now that you’re here, let’s get started! If you’re new to yoga, it can be helpful to look for a studio that focuses on beginners. This may be a stepping stone toward a more advanced practice, or it might become your forever yoga home. The right type of yoga for you may be different from what someone else needs, so explore and see what fits.

The Well Yoga Dubuque is a beginner-focused studio in Dubuque, Iowa, offering a variety of classes like Yoga Fundamentals, Slow Flow, gentle Yin, and stretching. Each class is designed to help participants connect with their inner potential, let go of limiting beliefs, and foster a connection with God and spirit.

Our classes at The Well are thoughtfully structured with beginners in mind. We seek to support students throughout their practice, helping them build confidence and grow at their own pace.

If you’re starting a new yoga practice, here are some common mistakes to avoid, inspired by Journey Into Power by Baron Baptiste:

  1. Believing Your Doubts. Doubts can manifest as self-limiting beliefs. Don’t let these lies define what you’re capable of.
  2. Despising Small Beginnings. You don’t have to dive in all at once. Start with shorter sessions and work up to longer practices. It’s okay to take rests when needed. At The Well, we offer classes ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, with shorter on-demand videos under 30 minutes.
  3. Embracing Tradition Over Intuition. You don’t need to follow every posture or recommendation exactly. Listen to your body—take what you need, and leave what doesn’t serve you.
  4. Forgetting That the Prize is in the Process. Yoga is a journey, not a destination. Your practice will evolve, and that’s okay. Let go of expectations and embrace each experience as it comes.
  5. Falling Into the Trap of Comparison and Competition. Accept yourself and others as whole and complete, just as you are. Everyone’s journey is different, and we’re all at unique points on our paths.
  6. Overdoing It. Sometimes, less is more. Listen to your body, and never push yourself to the point of pain. If something doesn’t feel right, ask your teacher for modifications.
  7. Not Understanding Your Resistance. Resistance is a natural part of the journey, whether it’s physical tension, mental blocks, or simply hesitating to roll out your mat. When you feel stuck, take a moment to examine your thoughts. Let go of any unnecessary expectations or meanings you might be attaching to your practice, and allow the path forward to unfold.

At The Well Yoga Dubuque, we empower individuals to awaken, let go, connect, give thanks, and become renewed. Our focus goes beyond physical postures—we aim to help you awaken to the truths in your heart and mind, empowering you to release what no longer serves you.
